EXCITING NEWS FOR THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR!

This coming school year Montessori Regional Charter School will enter its 15th year as a charter school serving the Erie region. Since our humble beginnings in 2004 with 120 students at one location, we have recognized that we must adapt, grow and change to effectively meet the needs of our students and families.

During the past several weeks we have met with our academic staff and Board of Trustees to plan how to most effectively serve our student population in the coming years. After many meetings and thoughtful deliberation, we have come to the conclusion that our 2 campuses must be tailored to the needs of each group. This will enable us to effectively “follow the child” at their stage of development in a more focused setting.

Therefore, effective the 2018-2019 school year we will be reconfiguring our school as follows. Lower Elementary Campus (2910 Sterrettania Road) will serve Kindergarten and the 6-9 Unit (1-3 grade) and the Upper Elementary Campus (606 Raspberry) will serve the 9-12 Unit (4-6 grade).

What is the benefit to students and families?

  • Academic Services within each school can be targeted to the students grade and “plane of development” – the social, emotional and academic needs of children at each stage of life

o   Student Service programs like Title One can be focused on meeting specific needs

o   Behavioral programs like Character Education, including cyber bullying, can be expanded

  • Teachers in each unit will be able to collaborate, share resources and materials more effectively
  • Students in every unit will have a larger peer social network from which to form friendships
  • Outside speakers and enrichment programs can be customized and targeted to each facility
  • Facilities  will better target the needs of students

o   Playground at Lower Elementary campus will better serve younger students

o   Gym at Upper Elementary can provide more group assemblies and sports options

o   Upper elementary students will have space for independence and self-reliance

o   Technology needs can be effectively targeted and efficiently utilized

  • Effective use of space allowing us to grow at the Upper Elementary level
  • After school programs can be tailored to each campus  to provide age appropriate programs and all grade level students will have equal access to after school programs

We know that there will be lots of questions related to transportation, childcare and related issues for families. While we do not have all of the answers yet, we wanted to get this information to families as soon as possible. This is a very exciting and dynamic point in the history of our school. We think that these changes enhance and support our students’ academic, social and emotional success by using our resources in a targeted manner.

We plan on holding family meetings in May, by grade unit, to update you on the plans. In addition, we will cover other important issues such as our Charter renewal, building plans and the strategic planning process.

We know that change can be difficult. We also know that our community has risen to the challenges of change many times and our ability to quickly and effectively respond to the needs of our students and families is what sets us apart from other organizations. We are asking for your support and patience as we continue to grow and evolve, setting the stage for one unified campus and expanded programs.

As we progress we will keep you updated. In the meantime please join us on Instagram at montessorierie and continue to watch our website at www.mrcserie.org for more information.

Thank you for your support of MRCS. We are looking forward to continuing to serve our students and families next year and for generations to come.
